Three Pacific Northwest bands will perform during a live, human-hosted KEXP broadcast Saturday night.
TV Star, Plash and Glass Egg appear on Audioasis Live from 9 p.m. to midnight Eastern on Sept. 19. DJ Kennady hosts the concert from the KEXP Gathering Space in Seattle.
Listeners throughout the United States can hear the broadcast free through KEXP’s online player, its mobile app or a compatible smart speaker.
A regional music guide becomes a concert
Audioasis is KEXP’s weekly exploration of music from the Pacific Northwest.
The program reaches beyond Seattle to include artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and British Columbia. Its regular editions combine new music, older recordings, demos, vinyl selections, local history and information about upcoming concerts.
The Sept. 19 edition brings that regional focus before an audience. TV Star, Plash, and Glass Egg will each perform during the three-hour broadcast.
KEXP has not published a detailed running order or set lists. Listeners should expect three separate performances connected by Kennady’s presentation rather than assume a particular artist will begin at a particular time.
Human curation remains at the center
Kennady Quille hosts Audioasis and guides listeners through music from across the region.
That role is important because a local-music program can otherwise become little more than a collection of unfamiliar names. Kennady supplies context, identifies connections, and gives new artists a place alongside musicians who helped shape the Northwest’s music history.
KEXP describes the show as a way to hear “the new, the old, the demos, the vinyl, and the future” of the region’s music.
The live event adds another layer to that curatorial work. Listeners will hear the host, performers, and audience sharing the same space in real time.
Note the difference between the pre-show and broadcast
The public event begins at 8 p.m. Eastern with an hour-long set by Phoenix, a graduate of KEXP’s 90.TEEN program.
KEXP says the set takes place before the live broadcast begins. It should not be promoted as part of the confirmed national radio program.
The Audioasis Live broadcast itself begins at 9 p.m. Eastern and continues until midnight.
How to listen
Listeners can use several free methods:
- Visit KEXP.org shortly before 9 p.m. Eastern and select “Listen Live.”
- Use the free KEXP app for iOS or Android.
- Enable the KEXP Alexa skill and say, “Alexa, play KEXP.”
- Say, “OK Google, play KEXP.”
- Find KEXP through a compatible Sonos system.
- Tune to 90.3 FM in the Seattle reception area.
The KEXP app includes a real-time playlist, which can help listeners identify unfamiliar songs and performers.
Replay and accessibility
KEXP normally makes its programs available through a two-week streaming archive. Its apps also provide access to archived shows.
Alexa users can request a recent program by name. For example, after enabling the KEXP skill, ask Alexa to play Audioasis from Saturday.
Archive availability helps listeners who can’t stay awake until midnight. However, KEXP has not promised a permanent standalone recording of the Sept. 19 event. The real-time broadcast is the confirmed opportunity to hear it.
You can experience the performances and host presentation entirely through audio. No video is required. KEXP may publish performance videos later, but those should be described as recordings of the event.
Smart-speaker support gives blind and low-vision listeners a direct screen-free route to the broadcast. The app, website, and local FM signal provide alternatives.
KEXP has not announced a synchronized transcript. The app’s playlist can supply artist and recording information that may not be repeated during every performance.
